Patient Prayer (Luke 11)

Patient Prayer Introduction

Making wise decisions is one of the most important things in life. The decisions you make in life determine the course of your life and your eternal destiny. In our message series Need Direction? we’ve been looking at how to get God’s direction in making decisions. Several weeks ago, we look at the importance of God’s Word to give us principles on which to base our decisions. Last week, we looked at the need for good counsel from other godly people at input for our decisions.

This week, we’re going to be looking at how to get guidance from God Himself, in our message entitled “Patient Prayer.” Patient prayer brings supernatural guidance into our lives. You see, even if you had all the data of everything that has happened in the past, you still couldn’t make wise decisions without taking the future into account. God, however, knows the future. God understands and moves in the spiritual realm that we cannot see with our physical eyes. Patient prayer opens up the unseen spiritual realm to us as we seek guidance from God. …

Getting Good Counsel (2 Timothy 3)

Getting Good Counsel Introduction

Today, we continue in our message series “Need Direction?” Life is a journey. Life begins at birth and continues until our time on earth is finished. On the journey of life, we must decide what paths to take in life. What path we take in life will determine what we accomplish in this life and where we’ll end up in the next. On the journey of life, there are a lot of forks in the road. Places where we must decide whether to turn to the right or the left.

Sometimes, we know that we are at a big decision point in life. At other times, a series of seemingly small decisions can lead to a huge life change. The decisions we make in life can have eternal consequences, both for us and for others around us. In this series, we want to learn how to make the decisions that God wants us to make.

How do people make decisions? Oftentimes, people make decisions based on their feelings and emotions. They make decisions based on what they want to do. At other times, people make decisions based on what other people are doing. Following the crowd seems like a safe way to make decisions. Sometimes, people make decisions based on what an influential person has said or written. However, these ways of making decisions will often lead you astray, because emotions, the crowd or an influential person may not help you choose the right path.

Today, my message is entitled “Getting Good Counsel.” If you look at my title, you will realize that if there is good counsel, there also must be bad counsel. In today’s world, there is a lot more bad counsel readily available than good counsel. Everything you see on television or read on the internet is not true or good counsel.

Proverbs 15:22 (NIV) Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

Wise Decision Making (Proverbs 3)

Each one of us is faced with making decisions on a daily basis. Some decisions are much more important than others. Making wise decisions is an incredibly important skill to develop. God’s Word has a great deal to say about wise decision making.

What is a wise decision? A wise decision is a decision in keeping with God’s unique plan for your life. In other words, a wise decision will be aligned with God’s will. It goes without saying that wise people make wise decisions.

The book of Proverbs divides people up into two categories, the wise and the foolish. The wise are considered righteous and the foolish, wicked. Foolish people make foolish decisions, with unfortunate results.

Proverbs 3:33 (NIV)  The LORD‘s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.

Your Unique Plan (Romans 12)

If you want to achieve something of significance with your life, you need to be moving in the right direction. God wants to show you the right direction to take in life so that your life has an impact for eternity. That’s what we’re talking about in our message series called “Need Direction?” Although every believer must follow the general principles of God’s Word, God has a special direction of every person.

Today, my message is entitled “Your Unique Plan.” Your unique plan is not a plan that you dream up. Your unique plan is something that was created by God before you were born. The unique plan that God has for your life is God’s will for your life. Your unique plan from God is not something that you could never achieve. Your unique plan is in keeping with the way God created you, with your unique abilities and talents. God’s unique plan for your life fits with the time period in history that you live in, the place where you live and the people who surround you. Some people fear God’s will. However, God’s will for your life, your unique plan is the very best way you could possibly live your life.

Psalm 19:7-8 (NIV)  The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.  The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.

Difficult Decisions (Acts 20-21)

We are in a message series called “Need Direction?” We’re talking about how you can know and follow God’s will for your life. God wants you to know His will, He wants to guide your decisions in life. Every believer acknowledges Jesus as Lord of their lives. That means that Jesus is the one who gives us direction for life. Every decision in life should be only made after consultation with God. When we make decisions on our own, without God’s help, is when we get into trouble.

God wants you to know and follow His guidance.

Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)  Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

The Silence of God (Isaiah 58:1-9)

Today, we begin a new message series called “Need Direction?” I think all of us what answer the question of the title, Do you need God’s direction in your life? With a resounding yes.

The past three weeks, we ran a survey at church asking everyone 3 questions. What do you wonder about, worry about or wish for? When we combined all three questions together, the top topic had to do with knowing God’s will. How can I know what God’s will is for my life?

That question certainly does not have a one word or one sentence answer. So this series “Need Direction?” will be looking at what the Bible has to say about making decisions in a godly way. God’s Word gives us general principles about what God’s will is and how to make decisions in life.

Romans 12:2 (NLT)  Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
