A Life That Speaks (Colossians 3:5-4:6)

In our message series, Change Your World, we’re learning how to influence others for Jesus, one person at a time. If you’re a believer, God has placed in your spiritual DNA a desire to lead others to Christ. God has created you as His son or daughter with both the ability and the desire to birth others into His Kingdom. Yet many believers struggle with reaching out to those who don’t yet know the Lord. Part of the struggle is simply not knowing what to do. Another aspect of the struggle to reach out is the fear of rejection or offending another person. Yet, God’s Word tells us to let our lights shine. Let the fire of God in our lives burn out in the open, not hidden away in our closets or our churches.

I want to start a fire, how about you? Once one believer let’s their fires burn out in the open, others catch the spark and the end result is remarkable. This morning, we’re going to look at something that everyone can do. Something that everyone can and should do to influence their world. My message this morning is entitled “A Life That Speaks.” God wants your lifestyle to be so different from that of the unbelievers around you that you stand out. God wants your life to be so radically different that others around you say “He/she sure is different.”

A life that speaks is a life that goes against the flow of our decadent culture to such an extent that it prompts people to come up to you and ask questions. Questions like:

  • Why are you so different?
  • Why don’t you do _____________ like everyone else?
  • Where do you go to church?
  • Why are so full of joy?
  • Don’t you ever worry?
  • Why do you read your Bible all the time?
  • Can you help me read my Bible?
  • Could I come to your church or Life Group?

How would you like people to ask you those kinds of questions? Just answering those questions would make outreach easier, wouldn’t it?

Passionate Prayer (Luke 11:1-13)

Today, we are concluding our message series “Praying with Jesus.” In this series, we’ve looked in detail at each phrase of the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6. If you’re putting what you learned into practice, I can assure you that you are praying more powerful and effective prayers.

Today, my message is entitled “Passionate Prayer.” We’re going to be looking at another teaching of Jesus on the Lord’s Prayer found in Luke 11 that gives us further insight into prayer. What is passionate prayer? First, let’s look at what passionate prayer is not. Passionate prayer is not prayer where you can barely keep awake while you’re praying. Passionate prayer is not prayer where you’re thinking about something else while the words of prayer come from your mouth. Passionate prayer is not prayer done because you feel guilty, but you’d rather be doing something else. To see what passionate prayer is, let’s look at …

In our message series, “Praying with Jesus” we’re looking at Jesus’ teaching on prayer, commonly called the Lord’s Prayer found in Matthew 6. Each week, we have been looking at a different phrase in the Lord’s prayer. Our goal is to learn how to pray more effective and powerful prayers. The Bible and the Lord’s Prayer teaches us that God’s will is done on this earth only through the prayers of God’s people. That is why we pray “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” As we pray in faith, partnering with God, we bring God’s will from heaven to earth. Prayer is one of the most exciting aspects of the believer’s life, as we see God move in answering our prayers. Today, my message is entitled “The Glory of God.” We’re going to be looking at the last phrase in the Lord’s prayer.

Our message series this month is called “Praying with Jesus.” In this series, we are studying the Lord’s prayer. Last week, we talked about the petition, “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Asking God for forgiveness for our sins is an essential part of a believer’s life. However, contrary to popular opinion, being forgiven does not erase the consequences of our sin in this life. You still reap what you sow when you sin. Satan tempts you to sin, because he wants to destroy your life when you give in to sin.

The Importance of Forgiveness (Matthew 18:21-35)

Our message series this month is called “Praying with Jesus.” Did you know that the Bible teaches that Jesus is praying for you right now? He wants us to join our prayers with His in order to see God do great things. So, when He was here on this earth, Jesus gave us instructions on how to pray prayers that get answered. Part of those instructions are found in the Lord’s Prayer, an example prayer to teach us how to pray better.

Today, my message is entitled “The Importance of Forgiveness.” We’re going to be talking about the place of forgiveness in prayer, both receiving forgiveness from God for ourselves and giving forgiveness to those who have sinned against us. A woman named Dawn Smith Jordan learned about forgiveness through a very difficult time. Dawn’s seventeen-year-old sister Shari was kidnapped and murdered just two days before her high school graduation. After the body was found, the killer phoned the family several times and described in detail the killing. Eventually, the murderer was caught and given the death sentence. Dawn and her family thought that this difficult chapter in their lives was over. However, the story wasn’t over. A few years later, the convicted murderer wrote Dawn’s family a letter. He told them that he had become a Christian and asked them to forgive him. What would you have done? How would you have responded?

Today, we’re going to look at the part of the Lord’s Prayer dealing with forgiveness.

We’re in a message series called “Praying with Jesus.” In this series, we’re looking in detail at the phrases in the Lord’s prayer to help us grow in praying more effective prayers. Prayer is the most powerful force available to the believer, because it connects us with the unstoppable power of God. I want to learn to pray more powerful and effective prayers and I’m sure you do as well. As we’ve looked at the Lord’s prayer, the first phrases had to do with God’s name, His kingdom and His will.
